The Jump Off

Here’s the thing:

Perhaps you are a seasoned exerciser and very comfortable in your own body. You know what works for you, and you have a routine or a program you enjoy.

Or you know you want to do something and are unsure where to start.

Sometimes, it can be supportive for someone to look at what you are currently doing for movement as it relates to your ever-changing goals, abilities, ailments, stress, lifestyle, etc.

Sometimes, it can be helpful for someone to assess your current progress and suggest a good starting point.

Storytime:

I did this for a few years as part of an EAP program.

I had a client I saw bi-monthly, and he would bring me his workout written in a notebook. We would review how he felt if he was hitting the seven functional movement patterns and how he changed it up seasonally (I.e., he liked to cross-country ski in the winter and ride his bike long distances in the summer).

Sometimes, I would demo some exercises and show him how to do them. Other times, it was just a conversation.

The best part is that he always walked away with another tool or a tidbit he could apply immediately. Sometimes, it was related to weight lifting, sometimes, it was something new regarding mobility—or both.

The point is that even if you have been exercising or training consistently for a long time, there is always something new to learn.

I learn new things constantly in my coaching every day!

“I was anxious about being able to establish good workout routines to attain fitness goals both with specific workouts. It was clear from the first meeting, Laura was a good fit for my needs. She was very aligned with the concerns of my physical therapists- it was as if they had shared notes. It was clear her approach was to make reasonable adjustments in my routines to optimize my fitness, but would certainly not allow me to overwork.

After out time together, I am certainly more confident of my capability to chart a path to optimum fitness. Laura is passionate about what she does and cares about the overall well-being of her clients”

Laura Thomas Fitness Training & Business Philosophy

Everyone can pursue their best version in a supportive and professional environment.

I have and continue to do anti-racism work.

I am a trauma-informed coach through CULTIVATE, a trauma-informed space-holding certification program. This does not mean I dig, address, or heal trauma. It means I understand the complexities of trauma AND the skills to ensure that I am attuned to my clients and myself to practice within my scope and integrity.

I value connection and communication with my clients. I take a human-first approach and get to know my clients beyond their physical goals, honoring their consent and personal boundaries.

I do not judge anyone’s capabilities based on age, race, body type, sexuality, or other personal identity.

I do not believe every workout must involve muscle soreness or sweat to be effective. Movement should never be painful or triggering.

I admit that I may not have all the answers regarding health, but I am always willing to go the extra mile to get information for my clients from my wellness circle partners (with permission to share their inquiries). I will refer out if something is beyond my scope of practice.

Movement/fitness is not a substitute for counseling. I will suggest therapy if you may hurt yourself or someone else.

The Jump Off is for you if:

  • You have an existing fitness plan or classes you are attending.

  • You have a specific fitness question or nagging area of strain/pain.

  • You desire clarity on what to do next or what would complement your current fitness plan.

  • You want a sounding board for a few issues related to your relationship to exercise or expectations of your program.

  • You want me to review your current exercise routine and determine whether it’s appropriate for you or your areas of improvement.

  • You desire a holistic approach to your wellness and movement, including mindset and tips for making things easy and attainable.
